Origin
Chimaera is the Latinized form of the Greek name Khimaira, referring to a legendary monster with the front part of a lion, the middle part of a goat and the back part of a snake, which breathed fire. It is first attested in Homer's Illiad. Hesiod added that it was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna.
Appearances
- In Umi no Oriuta, the Numeros Empire performs a series of experiments to create chimaeras (キメラの研究), the details of which are described in a readable book and the end results serve as a chapter boss.
- In Ao no Kiseki, a Cryptid called the Sphynchimaera appears in multiple locations.
- In Zwei, the Chimaera (きめいら) is an enemy type encountered in Kenopi Volcano. Both its appearance and its in-game description make reference to Homer's accounting.
- In Xanadu Next, the Chimaera Zombie (キマイラゾンビ) is a boss encountered in the Treacherous Woods. It is a giant humanoid but it still has the elements of the Greek original, with a lion's face and mane, a goat's horns and snakes in the place of arms... and it breathes fire. The monster reappears in non-boss form in Strangerock Castle along with a base Chimaera and the Crimson Chimaera (クリムゾンキマイラ).
- In Ys IX, a trio of alchemically created chimaeras serve as bosses in the Ancient Fortress of Balduq. The first is Chimera Bordon (キメラ・ボードン), the second is Chimera Lution (キメラ・ルーション) and the third is Chimera Chard the 3rd (キメラ・シャルド3世).
