Origin
Baphomet is a supposed god or deity appearing in medieval Christian sources from the late 11th century, allegedly worshiped by Muslims. The name is generally agreed to be an Old French corruption of Mahomet (Muhammad) based on an incorrect belief that Muhammad was the subject of worship. The name became especially prominent during the trial of the Knights Templar when several of the confessions mention it as a figure the knights allegedly worshiped.
Appearances
- Though not named, Éliphas Lévi's 19th century illustration of Baphomet is used in the original Sorcerian manual to illustrate the section labeled 'The Book of Magic'.
- A trio of Larva that appears in Ys IX are named after Baphomet. Vafmedu (ヴァフメドゥ) and Gualmedu (グァルメドゥ) are encountered during ordinary Grimwald Night battles while Vaf Medios (ヴァフ・メディオス) is a secret boss and bears the title Wicked King of the Unending Night (夜明けを阻む邪霊王). Each resembles a massive goat head with a humanoid and feminine upper torso sticking out of the top, with additional goat horns. This calls to mind the appearance of Baphomet in Levi's illustration.
Trivia
- The association of Baphomet with the appearance of a humanoid goat comes from Levi's drawing and does not appear before it.
