Monstrum Nox
Origin: Latin
Japanese: モンストルム・ノクス
Appears In: Ys IX

Origin

Monstrum is Latin and refers to an evil omen or a divine one foretelling misfortune, or to a thing that evokes fear or wonder. Nox is Latin for 'Night' or 'Darkness' and is a translation of the Greek Nyx, the goddess of primordial darkness. Taken together the name (loosely) means 'Night of Monsters'.

Appearances

  • Monstrum Nox is the subtitle to Ys IX. It refers to the protagonists (known as the Monstrum individually and collectively) and to the Grimwald Night phenomenon which they exist to fight.
  • The song that plays at the start of the Grimwald Nights and the title of final Chapter of Ys IX also bear the name Monstrum Nox.

Trivia

  • Given the intended meaning, the proper Latin conjugation for the title would be Nox Monstrorum. Likewise references to the Monstrum collectively would be Monstra.
