Origin
This desert that serves as a barrier to travel in northern Afroca is derived from the real-world Sahara Desert. The name comes from an Arabic word that means, well, 'The Desert'.

- The fringes of the Shala Desert are seen in Ys V.
Trivia
- Earlier sources (the PC-88 manual for Ys I and the Ys Global Guide Book) and later ones (maps released since 2012) offer a different spelling of the Shala Desert, using (スハラ砂漠) instead.
- The Shala is referred to as the Deadly Shala (死の砂漠サファル) in Ys V and in the Ys V Proto Story which was published in the Perfect Data of Ys book.
