Origin
Hamilcar is the Latin form (via Greek) of the Semitic Carthaginian name Hmlk, meaning 'Melqart's slave', Melqart being a major god in the pantheon who was associated with Astarte. The most famous bearer of the name was Hamilcar Barca, the general who lived in the third century BCE and was the father of Hannibal Barca.
