Marcus Claudia Garmanicus
Origin: Latin
Japanese: マルクス・クラウディア・ガルマニクス
Appears In: Ys IX

Origin

Marcus is an extremely popular Roman praenomen which has survived to the present day and is in all likelihood derived from the god Mars. Claudia was a prominent Roman gens used by patrician families and is said to be derived from the Latin word for 'lame' though there are no traditions that the legendary founder or any early known member was lame. Garmanicus is an Ys-flavored spin on Germanicus, a Roman cognomen which originated as a victory-name given to the general Nero Claudius Drusus after his victories in Germania.

Appearances

  • Marcus Claudia Garmanicus is the current Emperor of Romn at the time of Ys IX. A homunculus of him appears in the game going by the name Marius.

Trivia

  • As a male, the proper Latin form for Marcus' gens should be Claudius.
  • Marcus' full name contains references to several real Roman emperors, most notably Marcus Aurelius (the last of the great emperors) and Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (the fourth Emperor).
  • The circumstances under which Claudius became emperor may make the choice of Marcus' full name foreshadowing for developments in Romn which have been hinted in Celceta no Jukai and Ys VIII.
