Reflex
Origin: Latin
Japanese: リフレックス
Description (J): 鏡のように磨き込まれた鎧。(Xanadu)
Appears In: Xanadu, Ys I, Ys VII-IX, Umi no Oriuta, Ao no Kiseki

Origin

Reflex is derived from the Latin reflexus, meaning 'to bend back' and is a synonym for reflect(ion).

Appearances

  • Reflex frequently appears in Falcom's games as armor, beginning with Xanadu where it is written in romaji and described as armor polished to a mirror sheen.
  • Reflex appears as armor in Ys I, VII, VIII and IX, written in katakana except for the first game.
  • In Umi no Oriuta, Reflex is a Resonance Magic granted by the 'Mirror' Stone and grants one ally magic reflection.
  • In Ao no Kiseki, A-Reflex (A-リフレックス) is a Space Art that grants one ally Arts Reflection and is almost certainly an intentional reference to the spell from Umi no Oriuta.

Trivia

  • Given the descriptions of the armor and the function of the various Reflex abilities in later games, the name is almost certainly a corruption of 'Reflect'. Falcom likely adopted the name like many things in Xanadu, from Dungeons and Dragons where Gaze Reflection is a spell that creates a mirror-like effect to protect the caster from gaze attacks.
