Origin
Roland is a literary character based on a real-life military governor who served Charlemagne and who was killed by Basque forces while serving in the rearguard at Roncevaux Pass. The sole contemporary account of his life refers to him as Hruodlandus, the Latinized form of the Frankish name *Hrōþiland (a combination of the words for 'Fame' and 'Country'). He became immortalized in the body of literature known as the Matter of France, particularly the Chanson de Roland.
Appearances
- Roland Vander was the childhood friend of Dreichels Reise Arnor and served beside him in the War of the Lions, two hundred and fifty years before the series begins. Like his historical inspiration, he died in battle. He is first mentioned in the Black Records in Sen no Kiseki II but isn't named until the following game.
Trivia
- Roland is a cognate to the Italian Orlando.
