Origin

Basilica is a Latin term for a multipurpose public building, derived from the Ancient Greek word Basilike, meaning 'Royal Hall'. In several modern languages the term has adopted a religious meaning, being used to describe both an architectural style used for churches as well as to identify particular churches.
