Carmen is a French opera by Georges Bizet and its title character is a passionate gypsy; The opera remains one of the most popular and widely performed in the western canon. The name itself comes from Spanish/Italian, ultimately derived from the Hebrew word Karmel (כַּרְמֶל) meaning 'Garden Land' and refers to a mountain range in the north of modern-day Israel.
