Origin
Valkyrie is the English and Dutch rendering of the Old Norse word Valkyrja. That is made of two compounds, Valr ('Battlefield Dead') and Kjósa ('Chooser'), leading to the combined meaning 'Chooser of the Slain'. The valkyries were female attendants of the god Odin who chose those who die in battle, ferrying them to Valhalla. They are frequently fierce warriors in their own right.
