Origin
Deva in Sanskrit means 'Heavenly' or 'Divine' and refers to a category of supernatural beings who eventually were distinguished from the related Asuras, with the former being good and the latter evil. The word comes from a Proto Indo-European root meaning 'Shining' and is etymologically related to the Greek Zeus, the Latin Deus and everything derived from that. Deva is specifically the masculine form of the name, its feminine form is Devi.
