Origin

Kogarashi is a Japanese term for a cold winter wind. Ichimonji means 'One (written) Character' and is a reference to the thirteen swordsmiths summoned by Emperor Go Toba in 1208 CE to produce swords for the imperial court and to share their methods of making high-quality swords. They signed all the swords made with the characters Kiku (the imperial chrysanthemum symbol) and Ichi ('One'). Hence these swords collectively became known as the Kikuichimonji.
