Origin
Arakhne is Ancient Greek for 'Spider' and is also the name given to the woman who according to myths challenged Athena to a weaving contest. If you know anything about Greek mythology, you know that didn't end well for her. The Latinized form of the name is Arachne.
Appearances
- In Akai Shizuku, Arakhne (アラクネ) is the first Earth-elemental Spirit and can be summoned by Avin (PC98-only) and Conrad.
- In Sora no Kiseki The 3rd, the Arakhne are a family of demonic spiders numbering among the Seventy Seven Devils. They include Arakhne Graia (アルケニー・グライア), Arakhne Evros (アルケニー・エプロス), Arachne Thaleia (アルケニー・タレイア) and their mother Arachne Sigma (アルケニー・ジグマ). XSEED localized the shared name as Arachne and the last of them as Arachne Zigma.
- Arachne Graia reappears in Sen no Kiseki IV as a boss in Saint-Gral Labyrinth and Arachne Sigma reappears in Hajimari no Kiseki in the True Reverie Corridor.
- In Ys IX, the Araakhne Glove (アルケニーグラブ) is an accessory usable by the Monstrum.
Trivia
- While the name could also be translated in the Latin manner, the context of the names in The 3rd strongly favor the older Greek spelling.. Likewise the glove in Ys IX is part of a set of accessories which are almost entirely taken from Greek mythology.
- Graia (γραῖα) is Ancient Greek for 'old woman' and is the root of the mythological Graeae. Evros (Έβρος) is a region in Greece, named for a river known by that name in ancient times which referred to its width. Thaleia was one of the nine Muses who inspired comedy and idyllic poetry and whose name means 'Flourishing'. Sigma (∑) is a letter of the Greek alphabet.
