Origin

Charlemagne was a king in the eighth and early ninth century CE who succeeded in unifying (briefly) large parts of western and central Europe for the first time since the collapse of the Roman Empire. He began as King of the Franks, later of the Lombards and finally was crowned with the title Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III. For his accomplishments he was remembered as Charles the Great, which became Charlemagne after the French rendering Charles le Magne was contracted.
