Origin

Girafe is the common name used in modern French for Giraffa Camelopardalis, the iconic African mammal. The name comes from the Arabic word Zarafa and ultimately from the Persian Zurnapa ('Flute Leg').

Trivia

  • The Chinese Qillin and Japanese Kirin (both 麒麟) are used to refer to real giraffes, alongside phonetic transcriptions into hanzi/katakana respectively.
