Hamel
Origin: Ancient Greek (with Semitic roots)
Source Name: ἁρμαλᾱ́
Japanese: ハーメル
Appears In: Sora no Kiseki Series, Sen no Kiseki II-IV

Origin

Hamel is derived from Hamala, an Ancient Greek name for the plant Peganum harmala, which has a white flower and grows in mountainous regions. The name has uncertain Semitic roots as there is a related word in Akkadian; Hamala eventually morphed in to 'Harmel' over time.

Appearances

  • Hamel is the former village located in the mountains south of Parm in Erebonia, first mentioned by Loewe in Sora no Kiseki FC, before being seen in cutscenes in SC and ultimately visited by the player starting in Sen no Kiseki III. White flowers bloom in the woods surrounding the village.

Trivia

  • While another plant is more commonly attributed as its source, a 1989 scholarly text proposed that Peganum harmala is the sacred plant described in the Avestan texts as Haoma.
