Ys
Origin: French
Japanese: イース
Appears In: Ys I-II, Ys IV (Mask & Dawn)

Origin

The namesake for the entire Ys Series is a legendary city said to have been located in the Bay of Douarnenez in Brittany. Like the city in Ys, the French legend has it that the city was lost (though submerged beneath the waves rather than alighting into the heavens) and several versions of the legend end with the promise that the city will be reborn one day.

Appearances

  • The region that used to surround Ys is the setting for Ys I while the city itself is the setting of Ys II.
  • Parts of Ys are revisited in The Mask of the Sun and The Dawn of Ys, but not in Celceta no Jukai; plans to revisit the region were discussed but dropped during development.
  • Parts of Ys feature in the (now) non-canonical novel Illusion of the Ruined Ones.

Trivia

  • The Breton versions of the legend name the city Ker-Is.
  • Depending on the version of the legend, the city is sometimes said to have fallen due to the machinations of the Devil or a demon sent by God to punish the city. This figure is described as either wearing red or having red hair.
