Origin

The name Balduq was inspired by the city of Bar-le-Duc in northeastern France, which roughly corresponds to where Balduq is placed on the map of Glia.

The prison of Balduq is also clearly inspired by the Bastille in Paris. Both locations were originally designed as fortresses and were later repurposed into prisons. The larger city of Balduq was also the capital of the Gllian monarchy as Paris is the capital of France.

Trivia

• The journal that Adol wrote regarding his travels in this region bears the name 'The Prison of Balduq' (バルドゥークの檻).
• The comparison to the Bastille is especially pronounced in a conversation between guards that mention special prisoners that have been held there including one who wore an iron mask, a reference to the famous and mysterious French prisoner once imprisoned in the Bastille.
• Naming Balduq after Bar-le-Duc is especially appropriate as Jeanne d'Arc was born near that city and Ys IX features a character who is directly modeled after her.
